How to organize Wyrmspan: the Wyrmspan box organized with BitsBins, and the bins laid out showing what goes where

How to Organize Wyrmspan: A Home for Every Resource, Coin and Card

The easiest way to organize Wyrmspan is one small bin per resource, one bin per player color, and deck boxes for the cards. The BitsBins Wyrmspan Organizer Set does exactly that with 15 snap-lid bins that fit inside the original box: 6 Pods, 5 Minis, 2 100+ Card Boxes and 2 Stacks. No glue, no assembly, and the Pods work as trays on the table during play.

Wyrmspan has even more pieces than Wingspan. Four kinds of resources, coins, multiplier tokens, 183 dragon cards, 75 cave cards and a set of markers for every player all go into one box. Put them back in baggies, and the next game starts with ten minutes of sorting. Give every piece a bin, and setup is opening the box and handing things out.

What's in the Wyrmspan box

Before you organize, it helps to know what you're working with. Wyrmspan comes with:

  • 258 cards: 183 dragon cards and 75 cave cards
  • 100 resource tokens: 25 each of meat, gold, crystal and milk
  • 45 coins and 55 eggs
  • 20 multiplier tokens for resources and eggs
  • Player pieces in 5 colors: 8 player markers, an adventurer and a guild token for each player
  • Player mats, the Dragon Guild board and tiles, the card display, the round tracker and objective tiles

The boards and mats lie flat on top, and the eggs already come in their own containers, so they stay in those. It's the resources, coins, tokens and cards that need a home.

What makes Wyrmspan hard to keep organized

Four resources, plus coins. Meat, gold, crystal and milk get taken and spent all game long, and so do the coins. If they're mixed together, every turn starts with someone digging for the right one.

Five sets of player pieces. Each player needs their markers, adventurer and guild token at setup. Loose in the box, the colors end up scattered.

A lot of cards. With 258 cards in two different sizes, the decks need sturdy boxes that keep them together and protected, not a rubber band.

The full setup: what goes where

6 Pods: the resources, coins and multiplier tokens

Each resource gets its own Pod: one each for meat, gold, crystal and milk. The silver coins get a Pod, and so do the multiplier tokens. The lids come off, so the Pods sit open on the table as trays during play. Players grab what they gain, and nothing ends up in a mixed pile.

5 Minis: one per player color

Each player's markers, adventurer and guild token go in a Mini. At setup, hand each player their Mini and they have everything they need.

2 100+ Card Boxes: the dragon cards

The 183 dragon cards split between the two 100+ Card Boxes, which hold about 142 unsleeved cards each. The deck stays together and protected, and it's easy to pull out and shuffle.

2 Stacks: the cave cards and small components

The smaller cave cards go in the Stacks, along with a couple of other small components, so nothing is left rattling around the bottom of the box.

The eggs: in their own containers

Wyrmspan comes with containers for the eggs, so they stay in those and sit right next to the Pods.

Bins vs. a wooden insert for Wyrmspan

Wyrmspan is popular enough that laser-cut inserts exist for it. Before you buy one, it's worth knowing:

  • Wooden inserts usually need gluing and an evening of assembly. BitsBins arrive ready to use.
  • A fixed insert sorts pieces for storage, but you still pour them onto the table to play. The Pods go straight to the table as trays.
  • A wooden insert fits one box. BitsBins are modular, so many of the bins can also organize pieces in other games, and you can add bins if you add an expansion.
  • The BitsBins Wyrmspan set is $25.29 for all 15 bins.

Have Wingspan too?

Our Wingspan Organizer Set uses the same idea, with a Pod for each food type. If you play both, the two boxes set up the same way. See our Wingspan organizing guide for what goes where.

Wyrmspan organizer FAQ

Does everything still fit in the box?
Yes. The bins sit in the original box, with the boards, player mats and rulebook on top.

Where do the eggs go?
In the containers that come with the game. They already do the job well, so the set doesn't replace them.

Will it fit with sleeved cards?
The 100+ Card Boxes fit sleeved cards, but sleeves make a deck thicker, so a sleeved deck may need an extra box from our à la carte menu. Our card boxes fit sleeves up to 91 mm long, so they won't fit Dragon Shield sleeves, which are 93 mm.

What if I use the upgraded wooden resources?
The set is built for the resource tokens that come in the box. Some of Stonemaier's upgraded wooden resources are larger, so one Pod per resource may not hold them all. Customers using the upgrades have split the bigger ones, like the milk and crystal, across two Pods. Add the extra Pods you need from our à la carte menu.

Does it fit the expansions?
The set is built for the base game. If you add an expansion, add bins from our à la carte menu for the new pieces.

How long does setup take?
A couple of minutes. The Pods and egg containers go in the middle of the table, each player takes their Mini, and the cards come out of their boxes ready to shuffle.
